Hearth & Home

Steven Gellman

Live, acoustic recording featuring holiday classics and originals.

About the time of year when frost first appears on the pumpkins, my mind turns toward the holidays to come. A cozy home filled with firelight. Friends and family gathered around a table. A meal prepared with love. What would the holidays be without any of these? And a dog and cat, of course!

Akin to coming home for the holidays, I returned once again to the historic Hill Chapel in New Market, MD along with Doug Poplin and Margaret Wolfe for an evening of music spanning the holidays - from Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve. In keeping with the tradition started with Songs of Winter's Cheer, this concert was recorded live and in one take, warts and all, to capture the holiday cheer of this very special night. My hope is that this recording will bring warmth to your own hearth and home!

Songs of Winter's Cheer

Steven Gellman

Live, acoustic recording featuring holiday classics and originals. Includes Jewish Christmas - a playfully irreverent take on the holidays in Maryland.

From the liner notes. . .

Each year, as autumn turns toward winter and the days shorten and the air grows colder, my excitement for the holiday season grows. I have always enjoyed this time of year - the sights and sounds, friends and family, frosty nights and warm fires. And, of course, the anticipation of presents whether from Old Saint Nick or Hanukkah Harry!

On December 7, 2013 - a wintry Saturday evening with the first snowfall of the year on its way - I performed a candlelit holiday concert at the historic Hill Chapel in New Market, MD. With the talented Doug Poplin and Margaret Wolfe at my side, the performance was recorded live and in one take. It was a truly magical night. As you listen, I hope you feel that magic, too!

Revisited

Steven Gellman

Stunning guitar work and heartfelt vocals are the hallmarks of this retrospective album that features new recordings of some of Steven's most personal and revealing songs.

From the liner notes. . .

If you’ve listened to my recorded music, you know that I love to collaborate with first-rate musicians to create rich layers of vocals, harmonies, and instrumentation. But, if you’ve been to a gig, you know that I tend to perform solo and acoustic. Folks often tell me that they enjoy this “unplugged” approach, so it seems like the time has come to strip away the layers and to look back across my catalog of original music to revisit some of my “forgotten” children.

While Revisited pulls songs from each of my previous CDs, it is not a typical retrospective. Rather, I have hand selected a special collection of songs that mean a great deal to me. All of them have evolved and grown into something new in the years since they were penned - new attitudes, lyrics, tempos, & musical keys – but they are still some of the most personal and revealing songs that I have written.

So, make yourself a cup of tea, grab a warm blanket, cozy up with a loved one or companion animal, and settle in by the fireplace with these 12 songs. Each one has been stripped down to reveal the natural beauty of the melody and lyrics. Each one was written, performed, and arranged by me. And each on was recorded with minimal editing, often using the first take or keeping in the little mistakes, to create an authentic sound that is sparse, raw, and intimate.

I have learned from my hero Phil Ochs about the power of one voice and one guitar. So here is my offering to you – a private concert for your living room. One voice. One guitar. Twelve songs. Revisited.

Peaceful World

Steven Gellman

Featuring 13 new songs of peace, love, justice and just pure fun!

One of the most frequent questions I’ve been asked in recent years is, “When will the new CD be out?” Well, here it is and thank you for your patience. Peaceful World is a labor of love that has been a long time coming. It started as a simple idea from a good friend that grew to include songs with some of the strongest messages I have ever written.

Gandhi said, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world.” But, sometimes we cannot be the change. Sometimes all we can do is speak out for what we feel is right. The songs I wrote for Peaceful World speak of peace, love and justice. Sometimes the message is abrasive and strong. At other times, the lilting lyrics will soothe and caress. My hope is that in these songs you find inspiration for a peaceful world of your own.

As always, my sincerest appreciation for purchasing this CD and supporting independent music.

Peace, Steven

Steven Bio:

Billboard Magazine describes Steven Gellman's music as "intensely sensitive and impressively intelligent at the same time". As another reviewer aptly phrased it, Gellman's songs are "Kodak moments" from his life.

He often performs in nursing homes and retirement communities, and even used a choir of senior citizens as backup on the track "Almeda at 90" from his album "Photobook". Dick Cerri, President of the World Folk Music Association says "Steve's natural ability on stage enables an audience to not only enjoy the songs and stories, but to participate in the performance."

Nowhere is there a better example of how Gellman touches people's lives than the story of fan Jennifer Baker, blind and wheelchair bound from a lifelong struggle with kidney failure. She first heard Steven at a Borders Book store concert and instantly became one of his most ardent fans. His music was an inspiration to her in her last months and Gellman performed at a memorial service in her honor to benefit the National Kidney Association. The song "A Little Bit Fine" on Steven's CD "Return to Summer Lake" was written for Jennifer and is one of his most requested songs.

His new release, "Love Loss Longing", is Steven's first concept album. The eleven-song collection describes the journey one goes through at the end of a relationship. As Steven puts it, "To me, each song represents a chapter in a book, there is a beginning, middle and end. Every emotion is explored here -- sadness, anger, hope and joy."

Gellman performs throughout the United States and Canada at the premiere acoustic music venues such as The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA, The Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan, The Blue Bird Café in Nashville, TN, The Tin Angel in Philadelphia, PA, and Club Passim in Boston, MA. In Washington, DC, he has performed at the venerated National Theatre and the most sought after venue of all, The White House. Steven has opened shows for Dar Williams, Cheryl Wheeler, Richie Havens, Richard Shindell and Al Stewart.

Steven has garnered critical acclaim across the country - he was nominated for 4 awards from The Washington Area Music Association Awards (WAMA) and by The Gay/Lesbian American Music Awards (GLAMA) for Debut Album of the Year. His release "Return to Summer Lake" was chosen by Barnes & Noble for national distribution and was featured on their listening post wall. Don Murphy of the National Theatre says "Steven Gellman's insightful original songs and homespun stories provide a soul-warming folk rock respite in a busy chilly world."
